Judging New Orleans?

Denny Burk considers the media-glorification of New Orleans prior to the flood and finds it lacking.

Eric Berlin looks at some of the unhelpful judgmentalism. (Although his first quote isn’t too far off base.)

Another piece I read (I believe it was over at Michelle Malkin’s blog) quoted a New Orlean saying, “God is judging us.” The journalist then concluded with “No one’s that bad.”

Well, actually, we are all that bad. The looting and continual attempts to subvert the rescue attempts are placing before our eyes exactly who we are. We are fallen sinners in need of mercy. When you give us freedom to shop at Walmart without cost, we show you our true colors. As one blogger put it, “I guess this is what happens when you stop teaching the eighth commandment.”

As we pray, donate, and give of ourselves to the desperate needs of these displaced people, we need to remember that we do not do this because they are citizens of a once great city nor because we are so wonderfully helpful and kind, but because they cry out for mercy. As Christ has shown mercy to us, sinners of the same stripe, we need to share His mercy with them that they might come to know Him.
